It is important to remember that even though the doctors and nurses are looking after your baby while they are in NICU/SCN they are your baby and you are their voice. One of the most important things you can do is be their advocate. If you are unable to be there in person during the doctor's rounds in the mornings call and speak with baby's nurse and find out what the plan is for the day. Were any changes made to the treatment plan or are there different treatment options? It's important to gather all of the facts and discuss the options with the doctors.

Your baby has spent months listening to your voice and getting to know you and your family. They will enjoy you talking, reading or singing to them. If medically appropriate they will also enjoy skin to skin cuddles (kangaroo care), having you change their nappy, taking their temperature and bathing them. Call ahead and work in cuddle or feed times with baby's treatment and the nurses' break times. Keep the lines of communication open with your baby's team.
