Developmental Stages

Reaching developmental milestones in premature and sick full termers can vary largely and it is likely that they will reach major milestones later than babies born full term. This is due to the fact that they are younger or have had a difficult start to life.

If your baby was born prematurely they should be assessed according to their corrected age. This is the age they are calculated from their term due date. Your baby's development will be regularly assessed and monitored by their health care professionals.

Some babies may need extra support from a physio or occupational therapist, which will be outlined further in our section 'Specialist Services'

The Western Australian Department of Health has brochures relating to developmental stages through a baby and child's life please visit their page to download the relevant PDF document.
