Christmas in NICU 2017

TSWA Management December 25, 2017

More than 200 WA babies spent their first Christmas in a neonatal unit this year.  Some learning to feed and growing just a little bit more, others in the fight of their life.  It's a very emotional time on a day that is all about family.

We put a call out as we do annually to our volunteers to help brighten Christmas in neonatal units all over the state.  It was wonderful to see such beautiful quilts donated for our families.

Now that's a lot of mail!  Sending our Christmas gifts to all our regional families.

Now that's a lot of mail!  Sending our Christmas gifts to all our regional families.

The love that went into the quilts we received was remarkable.

The love that went into the quilts we received was remarkable.

This Christmas we distributed in excess of 300 quilts and more than 200 'Baby's First Christmas' ornaments.  The ornaments were donated by a local, family run business, Foote & Flame.  The quilts and ornaments went out to 26 hospitals around Western Australia.

We know these small gifts make the world of difference to our families during the holiday period. To all of our sewers we can't thank you enough for your continued efforts!

From the Board and members of Tiny Sparks WA we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Enrolment for Term 1 of Developmental Playgroup is now open. This year sees a shift from Tuesday to Wednesday but the timing and format remain the same.

We are excited to welcome new families into playgroup. Places are limited to 12 children per group to ensure everyone has access to the visiting therapist and the children and parents aren’t overwhelmed by a large group.

Groups cater to children from 6 months to walking and walking to age 3. If your child is standing independently and taking their first steps we recommend the walking group as the activities provided will better meet their developmental needs.

To enrol in the program please visit our website here - https://bit.ly/30LuSZX

If you have any questions about the program please send us a message.

🌻🌻Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH)🌻🌻⠀
⠀
Annika shares, "Our daughter Ivy, was born with a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) on 13 March this year. Her diaphragm had a large hole where her stomach, bowel, liver and spleen had herniated through to her chest, pushing her heart to the side and affecting her lung growth. She was given a 50/50 chance of survival. She was born at KEMH and then transferred to PCH where she had surgery and spent the next 2 months. She is now almost 8 months old and thriving. ⠀
⠀
The NICU journey was hard, but made easier by the incredible staff at both hospitals. We can’t thank them enough. To those families in the NICU, remember the NICU journey is temporary. Connect with other families who understand what you are experiencing and take care of yourselves - get some sleep, leave the ward for a break and reach out for help if you are struggling. You’ve got this."⠀
⠀
Not all Neonatal Unit babies are premature. ⠀

A staggering 58.9% of multiple birth infants were admitted to the Neonatal Unit for more than 1 day in 2015! We are fortunate to have a great relationship with the team at the Multiple Birth Association for Western Australia. Like us they are volunteer run, and like us many of them understand the challenges you face with a high-risk pregnancy or baby in the Neonatal Unit. Did you have twins, triples or more?⠀

💜 Light it up Purple 💜
From 7pm last night the globe began to turn purple to shine a light on the 15 million babies born too small, too soon. About 3,000 babies in Western Australia are born preterm each year, accounting for 75% of Neonatal Unit admissions. Globally 1 in 10 babies are born early!

Thank you to The City of Perth, The MRA, City of Mandurah, The Parliament of Western Australia and The Bell Tower for their continued support.

💜World Prematurity Day 💜
We were delighted to welcome 500 people to our Family Fun Day at Bardon Park, Maylands earlier today to celebrate World Prematurity Day. Thanks to the generosity of the City of Bayswater our guests enjoyed face painting, the cuddly animal farm, inflatable football darts and bouncy castle! It was wonderful to be joined by a talented musician, local food trucks, the WA Police and Fire Brigade too. Not to mention our collaborators Woman and Infants Research Foundation, Red Cross Family Support, Australian Breastfeeding Association, Multiple Birth Association of WA and Kidsafe who all hosted informative stalls.

It was so wonderful to see the community come together, share their stories and mark this special day. Thank you to everyone who joined us!

Our attention now turns to the Perth landmarks lighting it up purple at 7pm tonight 💜💜
